Pulsing with a festive summer buzz, Davis is celebrating its 100th Birthday this year. The Wardrobe is proud to have played a supporting role in our fair city for the past 30 years. If you wish to fully immerse yourself in the Zeitgeist, check out our upcoming feature story in the Davis Enterprise (July 2nd edition, page 28) describing The Wardrobe’s evolution in Davis from 1987 to now, “The Wardrobe: From Costumes to Style Coaching”.

I moved to Davis in 1987 to get a Master’s degree in nutrition at UC Davis while working at the legendary ‘Blue Mango’ restaurant. At the time, I was a pre-med student interested in a career in homeopathic medicine. As fate would have it, I took an art history class my last semester and fell in love. I graduated with a degree in Biology, but did not pursue a career in medicine. The pull of color, form and design was so strong it changed the trajectory of my life.

As if it was yesterday, I recall one of my very first impressions of Davis in 1987: I was driving down 2nd Street towards G (my store’s first location) and thought, “God this town could use a good clothing store and some great live music.” Little did I know that I would soon follow up on this hunch and find myself producing live music behind The Blue Mango restaurant on G Street.

Soon after that, I had the opportunity to take over The Wardrobe. In 1987 it was a downtown consignment store on 2nd and G Street. What seemed like just a newcomer’s observation became what is now my 30 year journey working with beautiful things.

The Wardrobe has fulfilled my love for art history, style, community and culture in one giant career. I have followed my heart and passions and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of Davis’ story. It is hard to believe The Wardrobe has been part of both my and Davis’ style history for 30 years. It makes me so happy that we have grown and thrived in Davis with so many wonderful people.

Colorfully yours,

Heather Caswell
