 Packing Lighter with “Mileage” Wear

PLAN  –  SELECT  –  EDIT  –  PACK  –  GO  !

The amount of clothing you pack is NOT proportional to the length of your trip. Instead, think about your itinerary, your activities, the weather and your travel style.

SOPHISTICATE   Business travel, fine dining, elegant hotels in a major city. Black is essential, think sleek silhouettes.  CASUAL   Staying at a B&B in the country. More relaxed, easy clothing and shoes. RESORT/SPORT  Staying at a resort which is focused on sports activities and possibly characterized by resort dining. Casual and dressy sport wear.  ADVENTURER  Off the beaten path travel…you’re going where others typically don’t. Pack sturdy, versatile, comfortable, high-performance clothing.  Be aware of local or regional dress standards to blend in.

FIRST STEP   –   THE ART OF BECOMING YOU

CHOOSE A COLOR THEME One base color and two accents.

CONNECT Stop, think and connect with how you want to look and feel on this trip.

CHOOSE THREE adjectives to best describe that feeling and look you want for the trip: (for example: colorful, comfortable, confident).

CREATE a style manifesto using “I am…” as you begin to pack.

GET SPECIFIC Consider key activities and choose specific outfits for those occasions.

ACCESSORIZE They are small but mighty!  Pack the best scarves, jewelry, shoes and bag to compliment your look for the trip.

THE MAIN OBSTACLE to packing the right amount of clothing is expectation. A suitcase can never be your home closet…but by building a good travel wardrobe and learning how to accessorize, you can be comfortable, functional and stylish every day of your trip.

A GO ANYWHERE WARDROBE INCLUDES:

– Blouse or jacket with a collar (think chilly)
– Tops with sleeves and modest necklines
– Long pants such as trousers
– Leggings
– A long skirt

TRICKS

– A poncho is much more versatile than a sweater for warmth–it’s our choice for every trip these days
-Large silk scarves can be worn as shawls or head coverings (always bring them with); scarves take little space and dress up a simple outfit for evening
– An even larger scarf or a sarong can be worn as a skirt in a pinch
– Pack a ‘dressier’ pair of shoes for evening

STYLE

P A C K … pieces that can be worn more than one way
…pieces that are so comfortable you won’t mind wearing them every day
…pieces that are simple and easy to accessorize
…pieces that dress up or down easily
…pieces that mix and match; think basic colors
…layers, layers…think morning to evening
…tops that zip are easier to layer than buttons
…outfits with at least one hidden pocket at all times
…one white blouse
…a vest with a pocket
…comfortable pants that can be dressed up or down
…a long skirt or a convertible skirt
…several knit tops

Here’s to traveling in comfort and style!

Colorfully yours,

Heather Caswell

  1. Great article on the travel wardrobe! I so agree…you can’t pack items thinking merely of trip length. Pieces have to mix and match, and accessories are the key to changing up the whole look. And of course, I love all the looks you feature! Thanks for posting. 🙂
